The Trump effect …

It’s horrifying to see and hear the ugliness that Donald Trump has unleashed. The rage, the nastiness, the trump2016-02-15-1455534387-1672884-nbcfiresdonaldtrumpafterhecallsmexicansrapistsanddrugrunnersaggression, the threats — I just can’t take any more of it.

On the weekend I read, on Facebook, that a group of armed Trump supporters protested outside a Hillary Clinton campaign office in Virginia. And there are already threats of intimidation on election day.

He has empowered (and emboldened) a hateful group of people, a terrifyingly-large number of them, and now that he’s wound them up I worry that they’re not going to go quietly into the night. I fear Continue reading

Who knew an elbow could cause such an uproar?

Canada’s House of Commons came to a virtual stand still last week. Prime Minister Trudeau was liontrying to get a bill passed. Bill c-14. Doctor-assisted suicide.

Yes, it’s a contentious issue, but it’s a conversation we must have, one that’s long overdue. And good for him for having the balls to bring it up.

But I digress.

There’s a June 6 deadline on the Bill, handed down by the Supreme Court. It was being hotly debated and contested. Everyone was getting more than a little testy. They
weren’t getting anywhere with the agenda.

Several members of the NDP, including Tom Mulcair,  Continue reading

Canadian and so proud of it …

I am lucky enough, with this blog, to have readers from every corner of the world; and, depending onProudCanadian where you live and the news you get to see, you may or may not know about the tragedy in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

When residents woke up last Tuesday morning the sky was blue, but some smoke, from forest fires, could be seen in the distance. By the afternoon the city was engulfed in flames and the 80,000 people who live there had to be evacuated.

The damage is extensive, lives have been taken and lives have been ruined. It Continue reading

My head’s gonna explode …

I had a different blog post prepared for today.

But on Saturday night a good friend of mine (with whom, when I lived in Montreal, I used to have the most intense, interesting andboom fabulous conversations on just about every topic you can think of, but especially politics) sent me an email about some articles she’d read in the Globe & Mail.

She wondered what my thoughts were, she was incensed about one of them, which was written by Jeffrey Simpson.

Frankly I hadn’t read them.  Margaret Wente, an OpEd writer for Continue reading

Oh happy days …

Finally, finally, finally the emotionless, closed, secretive, rightest-of-the-right, my-way-or-the-highway Stephen Harper is PierreAndJustingone.  Nine years he was in office!  Nine long years.

But we now have a new Prime Minister and hope is in the air.  Glory Hallelujah!  Justin Pierre James Trudeau, the 43-year old son of the late Pierre Elliott Trudeau (seen here carrying Justin), who was Canada’s Prime Minister from 1968-1979 and then again from 1980-1984.

And what a breath of fresh air Justin is.  He’s young, Continue reading

Well, that sure didn’t take long …

The Canadian election was a week ago yesterday.  Justin Trudeau was declared the winner at about 10:00,negativity2 10:30 p.m.  The Liberals, his party, won by a majority, unexpected by most Canadians I think it’s safe to say.  For that matter, it may very well have taken him by surprise.

Absolutely fascinated, swept along the wave of happiness that was permeating our country from coast to coast, relieved we’ll finally see the back Continue reading

Isn’t it time we stopped deluding ourselves?

I mean really.  Isn’t it time we finally admitted to ourselves, and everyone else, that the Canadiancrumbling economy economy is not good?  That it’s tanked?  That we’re really in a recession? And, for that matter, things are not that great in Toronto, either.  I know it’s a tough pill to swallow for folks around here, but it’s time we faced facts.

Every time I turn around another chain of stores is closing.  Big chains,
employing hundreds and sometimes thousands of people.  Independents are Continue reading

Politically speaking …

…it’s no picnic on either side of the border these days.  Here in Canada we’re getting ready to elect a new Prime flagsMinister, or nightmare of all nightmares re-elect Stephen Harper, our current PM; and the U.S. is awash in presidential hopefuls.  All I can say is, God help us all.

Last Thursday night was election overload.  The leaders of our four parties Continue reading

Here come the brides (and the grooms) …

… and all their two-and-four-legged ring bearers.

I was kinda tough on the US last week.  Not trying to be mean or nasty, just expressing my feelings.  And they’re still my feelings, in case you’re wondering.  But since then the US ring bearerSupreme Court has made some really good decisions, at least in my opinion.  So I think it’s only fair I mention it.  Can’t just dish out criticism without giving praise when it’s due, can you?

To be honest I wasn’t so sure they (the judges) had it in them.  But they did and both President Obama and the American public ended up having a very good week.  About time, if you ask me.  Joy has been in short supply lately.

Gay and lesbian couples are now finally free to get married in every state in the country.  All 50 of them.  Hallelujah!

But while I’m on the subject of marriage, how is it that polygamy is okay?  Not to Continue reading

This isn’t gonna win me any popularity contests …

… because I know it’s not really any of my business, me being a Canadian and all, but I’m just too sad, and too shocked, to keep it to statue of libertymyself.  What in the world is going on?  This isn’t the America I grew up loving.  This isn’t the America I grew up envying.  This isn’t the America I wished Canada would be more like.  This isn’t the America where I wished I could live.

What the bloody hell!

Before ya’all get all up in arms (trust me, no pun intended), I know there are plenty of good guys in the U.S.  I truly believe there are more good guys than bad guys.  But I’ve gotta tell you, from where I’m sitting it looks like the bad guys are winning.

You elected a black President.  Twice.  Once by an absolute landslide.  But from the instant that man moved into the White House, probably before his personal belongings were even unpacked, Continue reading
