Day 225. Another Calling?

I watched Tom Brokaw, the American broadcast journalist, on the OWN Network the other night.  Among the many things he discussed, he talked about how he emotionalalways knew journalism was his true calling.  How, as a young boy, watching the news with his family in South Dakota, he was transfixed.  And even then, he knew it was what he wanted to do.

Clearly he was right, because he is one of the most respected newsmen of our time.  Certainly one of my favourites, along with Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley and David Brinkley.

God, now I am dating myself.  I’ll bet there are a lot of you out there, who don’t know who I’m talking about.  Well, there it is. Would it help if I told you, I was a mere child when they were on the air?  It’s true, you know.

Not that it really matters.  I’m glad I had the chance to see them in action.  I can’t think of anyone I’d stack up against them, now.

But that’s not the point of this story.  Destiny is.

You could say it was Tom Brokaw’s destiny to end up not merely reporting the news, but making sense of it, for almost fifty Continue reading

Day 163. Finding Truth

Last Friday night I had dinner with a friend.  We hadn’t seen each other for a quite a while, so we had a lot to catch up on.  There have been a lot of changes in her inner voicelife (all good).  I had a few revelations to share, so we really took our time. We enjoyed a leisurely meal,  punctuated with much conversation.

We worked together years ago, when I first moved to Toronto.  Turned out she’s as cat crazy as I am; and we bonded over our feline friends.  So it goes without saying we had to spend some time bringing each other up to date on our four-legged children.  She’s renovating her condo, so we also talked a bit about that.

But she’s got a new man in her life.   And I had a gazillion (slight exaggeration) questions.

When it was ‘my’ turn, all I wanted to talk about was my writing.  Yeah, yeah, I know.  “All work and no play makes Jane a dull girl”.  What can I say?  My writing is going exceptionally well (knock on wood).  I’m excited.  And wanted to share.  She spent a few years writing a book (since abandoned), so she gets it. Day 32. By Chance?

I was at a client’s yesterday.  We were discussing a blog I write for him; and what the topic should be for the next post.  He was intrigued because three different situations had taken place within two days.  Two of them on the same day, and one the day after.  Coincidentally they were all connected.  And he thought it would make for an interesting story.  I agreed.

But it made me think about my own life.

Not long after I started freelancing I was in a boutique.  Although it was literally around the corner from where I lived, and I’d walked past it dozens of times, I’d never been in.  Until that moment.  Located in a victorian town house, it’s spread over two floors.  I was on the main floor.  Suddenly, for no reason that I can remember, I looked behind me.  Coming down the stairs was a former client.  We hadn’t seen each other in years.

For a minute or two we just stared at each other.  Of all places to run into each other.  When she found out I was freelancing, she immediately told me she had a lot of work for me.  Unbelievable.

So.  Was that meeting nothing more than a chance encounter?  Just two people finding themselves in the same place at the same time; and nothing more.  Was it serendipitous?  If I’d woken up that day telling myself that I had to start looking for clients, would I have bumped Continue reading
